Nothing brings family together like cake. Moms know this. Betty Crocker knows this. And Rudy Fig, the candy-and-confection crazed local painter, both loved and loathed for her sweets-laced psychedelia, knows it, too. It’s why Fig (yup, real name) has teamed up with baker-turned-curator Katie Carpenter to launch Sweet Hot Mess, a one-night-only art exhibition/baking contest, happening this Saturday at Cult Status.
“Dark Rider” by Eric Joyner
The two boast that the evening will be “the first time ever” that “fine artists and professional pastry artists will be exhibiting their work together under the same roof in a collaborative decorating competition.” We’re not sure about that. But we are certain that this event will bring together—perhaps for the first time under one roof—some of our favorite local peeps from the art/media/sweets scene. Either Fig and Carpenter cast a wide net, or creative types in this town are suckers for some Sarah Lee.
A few smiling faces we look forward to seeing:
- Mike Davis: a.k.a. Mike the 2600 King, the rap-a-docious graphic designer, DJ, and snack enthusiast from the Burlesque of North America crew
- DC Ice: chirpy snowboarding chick who brings the grim Victorian charm with her brand of vintage gory illustrations
- Miles Mendenhall: Culkin-esque dream boat/reality-TV subverter, famed both for his stint on Bravo’s Work of Art and his rigorously academic print practice
- Rob McBroom: macho nerd assemblage artist and lowbrow connoisseur
The artist line-up is a happy one, and stretches beyond the Twin Cities to bring in some East Coast folks (Martha Rich, a cakey cute illustrator from Philadelphia), West Coasters (donut-and-robot artist Eric Joyner, from San Francisco), and even a few superflat-style illustrations from Singapore, courtesy an animator named Caramelaw.
A slew of local bakeries will create delicious concoctions inspired by the art, and at the end of the night, a panel of cake eaters—er, guest judges—will crown a champ.
The sweets assessors? Again, our favorite folks. The great Kate Iverson of Permanent Art and Design Group; Kim Ode, the Star Tribune‘s resident baking expert; and one of our own food bloggers, the lovely Stephanie Meyer.
Swing into Cult Status on Saturday, and have a bite. Beats the hell out of grapes and sweaty cheese.
