Wood You Be Mine?

Handmade boxes as beautiful as the baubles

Talk about talent: These jewelry boxes are handmade locally by artist Richard Helgeson. It’s often difficult to find jewelry boxes as beautiful as the things they hold; they tend to veer into treacly territory. Helgeson’s designs range from small, twist-top boxes to large, multi-level divided trays, but he keeps a clean aesthetic, no doubt knowing it provides a perfect backdrop for the sparkle inside. Helgeson can custom-craft a box just for you—and all those truly twinkly best friends.

At right: Mottled cherry bracelet box, $75; mahogany, ebony, and walnut burl box, $30. Below: cherry and ebony jewelry box, $525, Available at Xylos, 3020 W. 50th St., Edina, 612-922-1702, xylosgallery.com

Editor’s Note: In our February Muse section, artist Richard Helgeson was inadvertently misidentified as Dick Schultz. Helgeson makes the jewelry boxes pictured, but Dick Schultz makes the inlay nature-themed boxes.
