American Craft Forum: Craft Writing Now

January 13 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Minneapolis, Minnesota—The American Craft Council, a national nonprofit based in Minneapolis, will host a conversation about craft writing on zoom at 1 p.m. Central on Jan. 13. This program, part of the American Craft Forums series presented in conjunction with American Craft magazine, will feature the winners of the Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing.

The award is named for the late Lois Moran, long-serving editor of American Craft magazine, published by the Craft Council. The winners and the guest jurors will explore what it means to write about craft in the contemporary moment, who is writing and has access to platforms, how craft intersects with the human experience and how this type of dialogue can really help us move the dial.
The winners of the inaugural Lois Moran Award include:
Velina Robinson Glass, a longtime healthcare executive who left the industry in 2004 to focus on a career in the arts.
Kelly Pendergrast, a writer, researcher and media artist living in San Francisco. She writes about the social impacts of technology, material culture and digital images.
Aram Han Sifuentes, a fiber and social practice artist, writer and educator who works to claim spaces for immigrant and disenfranchised communities.
And the jurors who selected the winners include:
Glen Adamson, a curator, writer and historian based in New York.
Indira Allegra, who explores memorial as a genre and vital part of the human experience. Indira also won the Burke Prize from New York’s Museum of Art and Design for artists under 45 who work in the expansive fields of glass, fiber, clay, metal or wood.
M. Rachael Arauz, an independent curator of modern and contemporary art, with a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania.
“We are proud to host this forum with so many outstanding writers and artists,” said Judy Hawkinson, acting Executive Director of the Craft Council. “It provides a terrific opportunity for craft artists and writers, and the public, to exchange ideas.”
