Jil Evans: The Heart’s Bright and Dark Light
April 18 - May 24Free
In “The Heart’s Bright and Dark Light,” Minneapolis artist Jil Evans explores the role of light in conveying one’s convictions about and response to good, evil, danger, tragedy and transcendence. Inspired by five historic paintings in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Evans re-interprets and re-contextualizes light as subject matter in her large-scale, oil on canvas abstractions. Lusciously and rhythmically rendered, Evans’ paintings divulge a thoughtful and methodical study of light. The artist explains: “I am, like any interested viewer, hungry to meet the mind of the painter revealed in the work … My goal with this study is to concentrate on light and the content it carries, and bring something new to my own work in abstraction.”
Opening reception: Saturday, April 18, 5–7 pm. Free and open to the public.
