Join the Dakota County Historical Society and the Sibley Historic Site for October’s Mendota After Hours: “The Montreal Fur Trade and George Bonga of 1837”

George Bonga was a mixed race African and Ojibwe fur trader and translator who was born in what would become Minnesota to his African father, Pierre Bonga, and his Ojibwe mother. He was an important link between multiple cultures for the Fur Trade. Joel Brown will present an overview of the Montreal Fur Trade, roughly between 1650 and 1850 and the pertinent history of George and Pierre Bonga as it related to the Caribbean and the Northwest Territory.

A Cultural history interpreter since 1996, Joel Brown’s primary focus is the US Army Air Corps and US Army Air Forces of World War II. In 2016 he incorporated into his repertoire two notable fur trade voyageurs of the Territorial Era of Minnesota: Pierre and George Bonga.
