North Star Voices: The Malling of Minnesota

January 17, 2026 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Minnesota has the first enclosed mall (Southdale) and the largest mall in the U.S. (Mall of America). However, retail malls are facing tremendous challenges in the age of online shopping and with the comeback of mixed-use main street development. Join Thomas Fisher, professor at the University of Minnesota and the director of the Minnesota Design Center, for a talk focused on recounting the history of Minnesota’s malls and a look ahead to what the future of our malls might look like.

Registration is recommended for this free program, but not required. This event will feature a talk with Thomas Fisher followed by a Q&A with the audience.

This program is made possible by the Maurice Stans Fund.
