In response to the long history of silencing women and girls, Chicago-based photographer Whitney Bradshaw makes portraits of women screaming. She came to Saint Paul in early April to hold “scream sessions” and 45 of these portraits will be incorporated into a collection of 160 Outcry portraits on display June 6 through June 30, 2019, at The Show Gallery Lowertown, 346 North Sibley Street, Saint Paul (check the website for times). Bradshaw will attend the exhibit opening Friday, June 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Bradshaw provides women space where they can practice speaking up and out for themselves and each other. She also provides a space for them to be heard, supported, encouraged and celebrated. Bradshaw began this project on the night of the Women’s March in 2018. Since then she has photographed over 300 women.
Bradshaw invites diverse groups of women who do not know one another to her studio for a gathering, emphasizing community building while encouraging each participant to support one another, as they bravely let out feelings that have been silenced or dismissed in our culture. These scream sessions are empowering, therapeutic, and fun.
The resulting portraits ask viewers to contemplate difficult issues related to sexism, power, race, and representation while demanding that women be heard and believed is important to Bradshaw that a very diverse group of women are represented in Outcry. “I want to give a voice to as many women as possible. I also want to ensure that when a woman views the project, she can see someone like her. Likewise, when men view it, they can see their mothers, daughters, sisters, nieces, etc.”

Outcry challenges stereotypes around women and femininity while celebrating the resilience and insisting on a reconsideration of beauty and power. “When seen together,” Bradshaw said, “these intimate representations of individual power and expression become a monumental act of collective resistance.”
Outcry runs June 6 through 30 at The Show Gallery Lowertown, a nonprofit art space which seeks to create accessibility in the arts and unite artists of all abilities. ASL interpretation will be provided for the opening reception. Suggested donation for admission is $5. For more information visit www.theshowgallerylowertown.org.
