Pao Houa Her: ‘After the Fall of Hmong Tebchaw’
November 2, 2019 - December 14, 2019free and open to the public
Pao Houa Her is known for her compelling and personal portraits of the local Hmong American community. The photographer was born in Laos in 1982, and at the age of three, fled the country with her family during the aftermath of the Vietnam War (also known as the American War in Vietnam). Her’s experience as an immigrant growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota—and her desire to document both Hmong history and contemporary Hmong culture—informs much of her work. In the exhibition, “After the Fall of Hmong Tebchaw,” Her explores the original loss of the Hmong homeland and a recent, traumatic, and divisive incident in the Hmong community: the swindling of over 400 Hmong elders in the United States via a fraudulent investment scheme. Studio portraiture is combined with images of tropical, greenhouse foliage to highlight themes of displacement, geography and a collective yearning for home. Her is St. Catherine University’s 2019 Amy Marie Sears Visiting Artist.
Opening Reception: November 2, 5–7 p.m.
Amy Marie Sears Visiting Artist Lecture: November 14, 7 p.m.
