SMA presents a special, one-night-only show in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Soul Asylum‘s 1993 MTV: Unplugged performance on Thursday, April 20 at Hennepin Theatre Trust‘s State Theatre! Joining the iconic band for the first time since 1993 on keys is Ivan Neville, known for his legendary work with the Rolling Stones, Neville Brothers and Bonnie Raitt. The band also enlisted local string quartet STRINGenius to join them in performing powerful new versions of their iconic hits. The night will also feature a pre-show DJ set by Transmission’s Jake Rudh.

This year, SOUL ASYLUM celebrates 30 years since their iconic MTV special with a rare performance of an intimate, one-of-a-kind Unplugged set in their hometown of Minneapolis at the opulent State Theater. To coincide with the Unplugged special’s 30th anniversary and this special acoustic show, Sony will release SOUL ASYLUM’s original 1993 MTV Unplugged performance to both streaming and digital, newly mixed and mastered for the first time. MTV Unplugged: Soul Asylum will also receive a limited vinyl pressing for Record Store Day 2023. The band’s classic MTV Unplugged performance will also stream exclusively on Paramount+, coming Spring 2023. A staple of musical pop culture since the early ‘90s, MTV Unplugged has long been regarded as the quintessential stage for artists to showcase their raw talent. Stripped back, acoustic, and intimate, MTV Unplugged concerts feature reworked and reimagined versions of artists’ biggest hits, performed live with dynamic instrumentation.
