Prepare for a Macbeth unlike any you’ve seen before. Rough Magic Performance Company proudly presents an original, immersive adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Directed by Heidi Batz Rogers, adapted by Catherine Justice, and with a cast of 5 women performers, The adaptation finds modern reverberance through the infusion of Sylvia Plath’s haunting poem “Parlement Hill Fields” into the text. With Rough Magic’s woman-forward focus, the adaptation equalizes the narratives of both Lord and Lady Macbeth, exploring how the various traumas they have encountered fuel the violence and dark magic elements of the story. The Macbeths highlights the themes of trauma, loss, and unfettered ambition through a feminist lens. Plus witches!

The production features a talented cast, including Aimee Bryant* as Macbeth and Rough Magic Co-Artistic Director Catherine Johnson Justice* as Lady Macbeth. Showcasing their versatility, ensemble members Alayne Hopkins*, Ashawnti Sakina Ford, and Destiny Kromah play all the supporting roles. Since she earned her BFA from Howard University, Bryant has built a lengthy resume as a theatre artist in the Twin Cities and most recently performed in the acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Guthrie. She is an actor, vocalist, director, and teaching artist whose artistic practice is rooted in soul music, joy, and a rigorous curiosity about the way things are. Her mission is to use performance as a tool for self-reflection, healing, transformation, and black liberation. Bryant was named a City Pages Actress of the Year, and a McKnight Theatre Artist Fellow. This modern adaptation transforms Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy into an immersive theatrical experience. With haunting lighting and projection design by KD Deutsch and an original soundscape by Jaime Luperico, the production envelops the audience in a world where fate, fear, and power collide.

The production runs Thurs – Sun June 13–29, 2025, at the Center for the Performing Arts, with an opening night on Friday the 13th, promising an extra-spooky launch to the show’s limited run.
