María is a dedicated flamenco artist with extensive training. She is a former student of the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in New Mexico and a graduate of the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of New Mexico, where she studied under Eva Encinias Sandoval and Marisol Encinias. Her training includes work with dance companies such as Yjastros, Jesús Muñoz Co., Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, and Evolución Latina. She is currently performing in Spain with Grupo José Galván. As an educator, María has taught dance for Albuquerque Public Schools, YMCA, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre, and FlamencoWorks Inc. Her past studies in Spain include training with master teachers such as the Galván family, Torombo, Carmen Ledesma, and former Spanish Ballet Nacional members. She currently studies with José Galván(Sevilla), Carmen Talegona (Amor de Dios Madrid), Susana Di Palma (Minneapolis), and Marija Temo(Wisconsin Conservatory of Music). Now based in Minneapolis, MN, María is establishing herself as an emerging solo artist and leader and has founded the performance ensemble: Flamenco X.
Ping Wang is a poet, writer, artist and rower, author of 15 books of poetry, prose and translation, recipient of National Endorsement for the Arts, Bush Foundation, Lannan and McKnight Fellowships. She’s the founder and director of Kinship of Rivers project. When she was a child in China, she found a card with a flamenco dancer in a burning pile of books. She did not know about Flamenco but the gypsy spirit ignited the fire since then. After she moved to Minnesota in 1998, she started dancing with Zorongo Flamenco, then with Sachiko in 2016. Its music and movements have kept the fire going in her heart and limbs.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
