Celebrate Juneteenth (and Every Day) at Black-owned Restaurants

Jason’s guide to some of the best Black-owned Twin Cities restaurants

It’s Juneteentha great day to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Every day is a great day to support the small, but mighty, group of Twin Cities restaurants that are owned by Black innovators and entrepreneurs. Hopefully this list will grow in the coming yearsbut these are some of my favorites:

The Camden Social: Fonzie is building something special in North Minneapolisa beautiful restaurant, great cocktails, friendly service, and a killer weekend jazz brunch. Closed Monday and Tuesday, open for lunch and dinner.

StepCHLD: I’m a long-time fan of Kamal Mohamed and what he’s creating in Northeast Minneapolis. I wrote about his burger in the print edition, but his restaurant is far more than that. Enjoy his more casual restaurant Parcelle, right around the corner from StepCHLD.

Pimento Jamaican Kitchen: Tommee Beevas is a legend. Pimento is incredible Jamaican food, but it’s his social justice work that stands up even more impressively. Fast-casual, packed with flavorenjoy.

Soul Bowl: The fast-casual Soul Bowl from the talented husband-wife team of Gerard and Brittany Klass is a well-established hit. They’re growing an audience at their Mill District Klassics Kitchen & Cocktails, too.

BigE: Justin Sutherland’s sandwich shop on Grand Avenue brings top-notch ingredients that make it more than just an egg sandwich. Coming soon to Minneapolis.

AfroDeli: I’m a long-time fan of Abdirahman Kahin and his fast-casual introduction to African food in Minnesota. Find him in Cedar-Riverside, West 7th in St. Paul, among other locations.

Slice Brothers Pizza: Adam Kado and Hosie Thurmond brought Slice Pizza to Minneapolis in 2021, and have been quickly expanding to Mall of America, downtown St. Paul, and Midtown Global Market.

Wendy’s House Of Soul: Wendy Puckett created the SOULROLL, a soul food/egg roll/burrito combo – it’s delicious, but she’s bringing her brand of talent and soul food to all aspects of the menu. Serving out of North Market in Camdentown, she does catering too.

Get Down Coffee Cafe: Houston White’s coffee company has a terrific cafe across from North Market in Camdentown, Minneapolis. Wonderful beans, great creative drinks, and neighborhood barbershop vibes.
