Prairie Organic Spirits

Summer is the perfect time to kick back on the deck, patio, or lakeside and experiment with a selection of ice-cold cocktails. Here I highlight a sampling that includes vodka recipes from locally made Prairie Organic Spirits, tequila-based creations from Patrón, and rum drinks courtesy of Bacardi.

Jalapeño Cucumber Mule

Makes 1

2 ounces Prairie Cucumber Flavored Vodka
3 ounces ginger beer
1 jalapeño
cucumber slices, for garnish

Slice jalapeño and remove seeds if desired. Muddle jalapeño in bottom of shaker. Add Cucumber Flavored Vodka and ice to cocktail shaker. Strain into a lowball glass filled with ice cubes. Top off with ginger beer and stir before serving. Garnish with cucumber.

Makes 1

1.5 ounces Prairie Organic Vodka
0.5 ounce rhubarb organic liqueur
0.75 ounce grapefruit juice
0.5 ounce demerara simple syrup
0.25 ounce aromatized wine
2 dashes grapefruit bitters
grapefruit peel, for garnish

Combine Prairie Organic Vodka, rhubarb liqueur, grapefruit juice, demerara simple syrup, aromatized wine, and bitters in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into lowball glass filled with ice cubes. Garnish with grapefruit peel.

Prairie Russian with Raspberry

Prairie Russian with Raspberry

Makes 1

1 ounce Prairie Organic Vodka
1 ounce raspberry liqueur
1 ounce cream
handful of raspberries

Muddle raspberries in bottom of a lowball glass. Top with ice. Combine Prairie Organic Vodka, raspberry liqueur, and cream in shaker or stirring glass and stir until combined. Strain into lowball glass. Garnish with remaining raspberries if desired.

 

Cucumber-Coconut Margarita

Cucumber-Coconut Margarita

This light Margarita puts a refreshing twist on the classic with cucumber and coconut water.

Makes 1

1.5 ounces Patrón Silver Tequila
2 ounces coconut water
0.5 ounce fresh lime juice
0.5 ounce simple syrup
7 thin slices of cucumber, 3 for garnish

Combine all ingredients (including 4 of the cucumber slices) in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with ice to chill. Strain onto fresh ice in a highball glass. Garnish with remaining 3 cucumbers.

Perfect Paloma

Patrón Reposado perfects this classic cocktail alongside refreshing grapefruit and sparkling water.

Makes 1

0.5 ounce Patrón Reposado Tequila
2.75 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
0.5 ounce agave syrup
0.5 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
1 ounce sparkling water
sugar and salt for rimming
grapefruit wedge, for garnish

Combine all ingredients except sparkling water in a shaker tin and shake with ice to chill. Strain onto fresh ice in a sugar and salt rimmed collins glass. Top with sparkling water and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Celebrate summer with the flavorful taste combination of Bacardí Lime and watermelon. Topped off with sparkling club soda, this cooler quenches your summer thirst.

2 parts Bacardí Lime Flavored Rum
¾ part watermelon liqueur
¾ part lime juice
½ part simple syrup
2 parts club soda
watermelon slice and lime wedge, for garnish

Shake ingredients vigorously with plenty of ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with a watermelon pick and lime wedge or 4 lime wheels.

Bacardí Rum Punch

A favorite apéritif in the Caribbean, an ice-cold rum punch is perfect any time of day. It offers a delicious medley of fruit flavors: sweet orange, pineapple, vibrant cranberry, and grenadine.

1 part Bacardí Superior rum
½ part Bacardí Black rum
¼ part grenadine
1 part orange juice
1 part pineapple juice
½ part cranberry juice
1 lemon, sliced

In a large container, combine all liquid ingredients, calculated per number of servings desired. Refrigerate until chilled. Just before serving, pour into a large punch bowl, stirring in ice. Garnish the bowl with floating lemon slices. Serve with a single lemon wheel.

Bacardí Lime Mojito

Mix up a twist on the classic cocktail with new lime-flavored rum for a cool, crisp refresher.

2 parts Bacardí Lime Flavored Rum
4 lime wedges
6-8 fresh mint leaves
2 tablespoons extra-fine sugar
1 part club soda
1 sprig of fresh mint

Add the lime wedges, sugar, and mint leaves and gently muddle until the limes release juice. Add Bacardí Lime Flavored Rum and mix the ingredients with a bar spoon. Fill with crushed ice and stir once again. Add club soda and garnish with mint.
