Elizabeth’s Pick: Chaider at Janine’s Coffeehouse

It’s about that time of year, when my cravings for Chaider kick in. Come again, my Facebook friends say when I announce I’m off to get my fix. What is this, this Chaider? For starters, it’s fun to say. Like Challah, only the ‘ch’ isn’t silent. And instead of yeasty egg-y goodness, Chaider is a 50-50 combination of aromatic organic Chai tea and local apple cider. The spicy-sweet, gently frothy, wildly comforting hot beverage is the brainchild of Jann Brom-Palkowski, the proprietress of Janine’s Coffeehouse in the North Loop. Situated next to one of my other favorite things, Martin Patrick 3, Janine’s has a mid-century-modern-meets-urban-hipster vibe that’s equally conducive to pounding away on one’s laptop as it is to curling up with a book of poetry. I hear the ham sandwiches are terrific, but I usually just stick to my Chaider. Janna doesn’t remember how the concoction came about, but the name, well, that just made sense. I couldn’t agree more.
