Elizabeth’s Pick: Porterhouse Steak and Seafood

In the August issue of MNMO, Jason Derusha waxed on about dining at steakhouses on a burger budget. This oxymoron didn’t really resonate with me until I went to Porterhouse Steak and Seafood—in Little Canada of all places. (Oh yeah. Not only am I a steak snob, but an urban eater. Normally, you’d be hard pressed to find me in a restaurant beyond the inner ring.) This was my second time at Porterhouse. Both visits were for family celebrations, and both times I was BLOWN AWAY by the beef. From the pillowy soft filet to the rich and flavorful ribeye, every cut is prepared beautifully. Medium means medium here—crisply seared on the outside, pink and juicy in the middle. Accompaniments like the portabella mushrooms and béarnaise sauce aren’t just salty afterthoughts, but complex complements to the meat. And then there are the sides, my favorites being the chive mashed potatoes, French onion soup, and a classic spinach salad. Oh, and they actually COME WITH every entrée—making this extraordinary steakhouse experience budget-friendly to boot.
