Izzy’s Ice Cream‘s Minneapolis location should be open by the end of this month, according to Izzy’s owner and proprietor, Jeff Sommers. Speaking on the phone and with construction noise audible in the background, I asked if I caught him on a busy day.
“No” he said. “They’ve all been busy days for the last year or so,” roughly when construction for the new site began.
After getting off to a challenging start, the David Salmela designed site seems well-suited to the location, amongst the Guthrie Theater, Gold Medal Park, and burgeoning rows of condominiums. Originally designed as a small production factory, Izzy’s Minneapolis will be more of an “ice cream kitchen” according to Sommers, with wholesale production for grocery and restaurant distribution as well as a retail shop similar in scope (if slightly smaller in size) to the St. Paul location.
When you get a chance to visit, look for new flavors like Mini Doughnut Batter Crunch—also offered this year at the MN State Fair—as well as their top selling (and my personal favorite) Salted Caramel.
