Kamal Mohamed to Open Kizzo in Former Stepchld Space

The elevated restaurant-meets-sports-bar concept will serve dinner, brunch, and house-made cinnamon rolls

It has been just over two weeks since Stepchld closed its doors, but this isn’t the end of the road for the Northeast Minneapolis space. Today, Stepchld’s chef and owner Kamal Mohamed announced that he will be bringing a new concept to the building: Kizzo, which is set to open Sept. 12. And the best part? The Cooper Burger is coming back.

Described in a press release as an “elevated counter-service concept that blends quality, creativity, and a come-as-you-are spirit,” Kizzo will encapsulate Mohamed’s vision for an intimate restaurant and social club that masquerades as a sports bar. It’s intended to serve as a versatile gathering space for watching the game (with six strategically placed televisions throughout), meeting friends for brunch, or having a date night.

“For me, a restaurant’s identity is never static; it’s a living thing that should always be open to evolving,” says Mohamed in a statement. “Kizzo is the result of that passion for innovation, and we’re so excited to open our doors this week with a fresh menu and a service style that feels like the perfect fit for this space. We can’t wait to see how Kizzo’s identity continues to grow as we share it with our guests and the community.”

The menu will focus on culturally inspired flavors and easy-to-share dishes, plus standout cocktails and a rotating wine selection. Shareable highlights include Garlic Fries, Buffalo Cauliflower, and Savory Peaches with Labneh on Sourdough (seasonal), while the entree selection features a Smashed Salmon Burger, Vegan Bang Bang Burger, Shawarma Mushroom Tacos, Crispy Wings, and the Cooper Burger—a fan-favorite carried over from the Stepchld menu (if you know, you know).

Weekend brunch will be centered around a rotating menu of house-made cinnamon rolls from Pastry Chef Yon Hailu’s Roll Ritual. Flavors to look forward to? Strawberry Cheesecake, Ube Cream Cheese (“Purple Haze”), and Carrot Cake, plus the classics. Rolls will be available for dine-in and carry-out every Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m.

While the rolls are the star of the show, the brunch menu also features Chilaquiles with scrambled eggs and house-made tomatillo sauce, and a Breakfast Burrito filled with hash browns, avocado, sausage, and eggs.

Kizzo is currently first-come, first-served with no reservations required. Keep an eye out for a membership component dropping soon offering additional perks for frequent guests.
