How’s everyone doing? Hanging in there? One of the ways I’ve been connecting with people (man, I miss people!) is by joining some of my favorite chefs and bartenders in some of the online chats and videos and virtual happy hours they’ve been doing. From cooking demos to cocktail lessons—there’s a lot of great stuff out there for those of us doing the right thing and staying at home.

Social Deliciousness, with Sameh Wadi

The chef/owner of World Street Kitchen and Milkjam Creamery is doing awesome cooking demos in Instagram stories. You can find these on the highlights on his main page. I did the cacio e pepe omelette for breakfast on Sunday, and we’re making his Kofta this week. (UPDATE- I made it – it was awesome!)

UPDATE: Sameh’s now uploading complete videos onto Instagram TV.

Karyn’s Quarantine Kitchen

Chef Karyn Tomlinson (late of Corner Table) is doing Instagram videos showing easy stuff you can cook with ordinary things in your pantry. There’s a great demo of Rustic Tomato Soup. I also like the roasted chicken recipe with stock. Each one has wine pairings from the delightful Erin Ungerman, VP at New France Wine.

Jon Olson’s Cocktail Classes

Jon Olson is the former bar manager at Esker Grove, now with Libation Project, and he is sharing easy recipes for classic cocktails. Guilty pleasures like the Cosmo, the classic Negroni, the Sazerac & Old Fashioned – you can find all of his recipes – shot through a window in his home at his Instagram TV channel.

Who Needs A Beer? with Indeed Brewing

Co-owner Tom Whisenand is hosting a very entertaining variety show/happy hour from Indeed’s tap room. They’re semi-regularly scheduled to be live on Facebook at 5 p.m., but sometimes they happen, sometimes they don’t. A recent episode had Har Mar Superstar, Tony Zaccardi of Palmer’s Bar, and Nur-D. Stars!

Tattersall Distilling Cocktail Class

Live on Mondays at 5 p.m., Mary Oglesby is doing demos from her home bar, showing people how to make cocktails. Yesterday she taught us how to dry-shake a cocktail with an egg white. They’re doing classes on Instagram live Wednesdays and Fridays at 5pm, and a brunch drink every Sunday at 11am.

Bachelor Farmer Live Happy Hour

Fridays at 5 p.m., I sat in with the Bachelor Farmer’s assistant general manager and wine wizard Amy Waller and assistant wine director Paul Hennessy as they selected a bottle to drink together. Last week it was Château Yvonne Saumur Champigny La Folie. They announced it ahead of time, and it was available at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits. It was an Instagram live, where the people watching asked lots of great questions about wine and pairings—plus, Amy and Paul are really fun, so I highly recommend it.
