April 1: April Fool’s Day
If ever you were the child stuck at the dinner table for not finishing your veggies, there’s a new place designed just for you. Carnivore Gardens, the brainchild of brother-and-sister team Pimm and Suki Thornfeld from Edina, sells faux vegetables made from meat. No, this is not an April Fool’s trick. Carnivore Gardens cook up roasted asparagus with an aioli sauce that is made from very delicately shaved Slim Jim. It comes out to just the right shape, and then it’s sprayed with non-GMO food-grade dye to look just like asparagus. So now you can look like you’re eating your vegetables, but you’re not.
Hutton also recommends the pizza, with a crisp ground-turkey crust. It’s topped with mushrooms (which are actually pressed duck), and olives made from Italian sausage. Hutton deems the menu’s real triumph to be the Veggie Burger, which is made from 100% lean ground beef.
Birge asks the obvious question, “isn’t that just a hamburger?”
Well…yes. But they bleach the patty with a food-grade bleach to give it the authentic look and mouth-feel of a real veggie burger. They also add a hint of rosemary to give it those nice veggie notes.
