Throughout the year, there are dozens of national food holidays that foodies love to celebrate. These holidays often are either ignored by the general public or used as an excuse to eat more of our favorite foods (for me, the latter). Personally, I like to acknowledge National Pretzel Day (my maternal grandmother’s maiden name is Pretzel, so we love all twisted things), National Ice Cream Day (my favorite food, hands down), and of course, National Doughnut Day, which is this coming Friday, June 1.
Every first Friday in June is set aside to commemorate the sweet goodness that is doughnuts, whether it’s raised, cake, or yeast; cruller, long john, or fritter. I don’t often get the pastries, but why wouldn’t I indulge when I have a reason to? Check out the following places and their promotions for the national holiday (that is, if you celebrate–but who wouldn’t?).
Angel Food Bakery
In the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Angel Food Bakery promises “a little bite of heaven” every time. They take National Doughnut Day seriously, as they develop a special menu for it. This year’s includes the “National Donut Day Jumbo D’oh!nut Special”, a donut bigger than your hand topped with pink icing and sprinkles. Angel Food Bakery gives you the option to pre-order doughnuts for the special day if you want to avoid the crowds, in addition to 50 percent off doughnut deliveries in the downtown zone.
Glam Doll
At Glam Doll Donuts where the sky is the limit, National Doughnut Day means not one, but three exciting announcements. In anticipation of the holiday, Glam Doll will have $5 Mac and Cheese Doughnuts all week (fried mac and cheese held in the shape of a doughnut). In addition, the first 100 customers through the door on Friday will get a free doughnut, whether your favorite is the Cloud Nine (a filled doughnut with dark chocolate bourbon filling and chocolate fudge brownie icing) or the Vanilla Darling, a cake doughnut with vanilla icing and sprinkles. Finally, Glam Doll’s first seasonal menu is being released the day of, which means loyal Glam Doll fans will be able to try their newest flavors in celebration of the holiday.
Mojo Monkey Donuts
Although Minneapolis seems to have more doughnut shops scattered throughout the city, St. Paul will partake in the fun too. At Mojo Monkey Donuts, they up the ante with the first 300 customers in the door receiving a free doughnut. In addition, a dozen donuts in a box will be given out for free every hour, so get your fill for Friday and bring some home for your family and friends to spread the sweetness. Spot the Red Velvet Cake Doughnut that day, which is a cocoa rouge chocolate cake, dipped in homemade ganache and topped with house-made whipped cream cheese icing, organic coconut, and spiced roasted pecans.
Bogart’s Doughnut Co.
Bogart’s Doughnut Co. will stay open until 4 p.m. on Friday instead of the usual 12:30 p.m. at their Uptown location or 3 p.m. at their downtown location, so you have even more time to grab favorites such as their Nutella-Filled or Vanilla Bean Buttercream-Filled doughnuts.
Dunkin’ Donuts
If you’re not able to make it to a local Twin Cities doughnut shop, any locations of Dunkin’ Donuts offer a free donut with any beverage purchase, whether it be an iced, hot, or frozen drink that day.
Other places to get doughnuts (although they might not have deals) include Sleepy V’s, Cardigan Donuts, SugaRush Bakery, and YoYo Donuts and Coffee Bar.
