Potter's Pasties & Pies

If you’re familiar with the downtown food truck scene, you’ve probably spotted the British flag-emblazoned Potter’s Pasties & Pies vehicle that is a staple of the Marquette Avenue lineup. Potter’s new bricks-and-mortar location, just north of the U of M campus, on Como Avenue in Minneapolis, has basically the same menu as the truck, but it’s a little trickier to find.

The shop’s festive red-and-blue door is located in the back of a small commercial building tucked into a residential neighborhood. Heading through it and down a flight of stairs can feel like trespassing until you reach the standing-room-only space with a small counter. The simple menu written on the chalkboard-painted wall indicates that the focus here is not on ambiance—there isn’t even any indoor seating, just a few outdoor tables—but on the traditional crescent-shaped pasty pockets.

Potter’s has pasties for those with conservative tastes (a pasty version of chicken potpie) and daring ones (vegetables in a creamy, Thai-style red curry sauce). And there’s always a weekly special, too, such as the sweet potato-filled Summer Time Chili, which is lively and full of flavor. While their golden pastry crusts can sometimes seem overwhelming, one-handed eating requires sturdy construction. Though you may not be eating alone—each hearty Potter’s pasty could easily feed two.
