Raise a Glass to Repeal Day at the Fine Spirits Classic

It will be 80 years since the repeal of Prohibition happened December 5, 1933, and what better way to celebrate than to raise a glass at the second annual Minnesota Monthly Fine Spirits Classic—December 5, 2013! (6-9 p.m. Mill City Nights, 111 5th St. North, Minneapolis, MN)

The tasting will feature premium spirits from around the world. Guests can learn about spirits from master distillers and industry representatives, sample cuisine from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, enjoy music spun by DJ Twice As Nice, and be entertained by local bartenders.

Bombay Sapphire will feature cocktail samples as part of their Bombay Sapphire World Bazaar theme—a global infusion of hands-on cocktail creations to show the versatility of their gin that is infused with a number of botanicals beyond juniper. Try your hand with these cocktails:

Sapphire Collins
1½ parts Bombay Sapphire
½ part fresh lemon juice
¾ part simple syrup
3 parts club soda

Pour ingredients over ice in a tall cocktail glass and stir.

Sapphire Cranberry Buck
1½ parts Bombay Sapphire
1½ parts cranberry juice
2½ parts ginger ale

Pour ingredients over ice in a tall cocktail glass and stir.

And how do bartenders produce such delicious drinks? One secret is to include bitters, which are concentrated drops of flavor from orange to vanilla, and more. These essences of bark, roots, fruits, plants, stems, seeds, and other botanicals are incorporated into an alcohol base and just a few drops will do the trick. Attendees can sample some creations by Bittercube, producers of slow-crafted bitters right here in the Midwest, who will be mixing up craft cocktails such as this twist on an Old Fashioned.

Of The Older Fashioned
2 oz. Old Weller 107 Antique Bourbon
0.25 oz. Muscovado Syrup
2 eye droppers of Bittercube Trinity Bitters)

It’s a fun night out, you can try many different things you may never have even heard of—and maybe you’ll pick up a few ideas to make your own specialty cocktails for your upcoming holiday parties. Cheers to Repeal Day!
