Northeast Minneapolis has Mexican restaurants aplenty, so when Pico de Gallo, from the owners of the former Chiapas, opened next door to neighborhood favorite El Taco Riendo, across the street from Adelita’s, and just up the street from Maya, I wondered if they’d bring anything different to the mix. When I visited with the kids, the answer was a big yes.
Pico de Gallo has a new, shiny interior, not fancy, but more conducive to dining in than taking out, which next-door-neighbor El Taco Riendo excels at. They have a selection of made-to-order smoothies and fresh juices, which my kids loved. My favorite find was the vegetarian platter, with a mushroom quesadilla, crisp potato roll-ups, addictive house-made tortilla chips, and generous dollops of guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Their guacamole was chunky and fresh, one of the better versions in the neighborhood.
Fair warning, four entrees for four people was about twice as much as we needed. It wasn’t a trouble, because we had great leftovers for the next day, but on our next visit we’ll share fewer orders, making it more affordable to boot.
