Summertime, and the lickin’ is easy, especially when it’s with a spectacular popsicle. In my youth they were sugar-loaded, but these days popsicle makers have broken the mold, and you can find healthy, natural, creative frozen treats in every size, shape, and flavor. Jennifer Helm makes her dairy-, gluten-, soy-, and nut-free St. Pops frozen treats with local produce and a little organic cane sugar. Even her wrappers are biodegradable. For a perfect complement to a hot summer day, I recommend the St. Pops elderberry lavender flavor. Find them at metro farmers’ markets and more (saintpops.com). If you desire pretty popsicles delivered on a popsicle cart to your outdoor picnic or patio party, check out Frio Frio. These cold, cold creations come from Katy Gerdes (of Angel Food Bakery) and partner Chris Weber, inspired by a trip to Latin America where street vendors sold paletas (popsicles) out of pushcarts. Now these Frio Frio ice lollies—crafted in small batches from fresh local ingredients—are hitting the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Have some happy licks of their strawberry balsamic basil, Thai iced tea, and pineapple chili at the Minneapolis Open Streets event on July 23.
