What to Drink Now

Deus Brut des Flandres

Several opportunities for celebration may present themselves this month. The team you bet on in the Super Bowl might prevail. The groundhog may emerge from his burrow and fail to see his shadow. Or perhaps you’ve managed to find someone who is actually fond of you, giving you good reason to pop a cork on Valentine’s Day.

Before reaching reflexively for the champagne, though, consider trying something a little different. Deus Brut des Flandres may look like a bottle of Dom Perignon, but it’s actually a beer—brewed in Belgium, then shipped to France to undergo traditional méthode champenoise techniques. “It’s exactly the same consistency as champagne, but it has a peach backbone from the malt,” says Jason Alvey, an expert on all-things brewed and the proud proprietor of the Four Firkins, a new specialty beer store in St. Louis Park that is itself a cause for celebration.
