In the summer, food trucks rule the downtown lunch scene. In the winter, those of us who work in downtown Minneapolis shuffle along like hamsters to our favorite skyway spots. The best are quick, affordable, and delicious.
Kadai Indian Kitchen: With awesome tandoori and a rotating lineup of curries and biryani, Kadai’s lunch makes for a great cafeteria-style meal where you pick a few appetizers, mains, and get some naan. It’s fresh and authentic—the best Indian in the skyway. (601 Marquette Ave.)
Andrea Pizza: This three-location chain claims to have the biggest slice in the Twin Cities. Roll it up and eat it like a New Yorker or get a knife and fork and eat it like an accountant. It’s cheap—just $4 a slice—and tasty. (Capella Tower, Highland & Towle Buildings)
I know there’s a push for living outside the skyways, but that winter wind can be wicked. Knowing your way through this lofty maze to the delicious eating spots is a point of pride for any Minneapolitan.
Bep Eatery: There are now two Bep Eateries to pick up a little pho on the go (or take a seat in the small restaurant). The broth is light and there are just enough jalapeños to kick it up a bit. (Fifth Street Towers and LaSalle Plaza)
Cafe Patteen: I adore this tiny, independently owned coffee shop that’s been open since 1992. I always get a mocha made with Ghirardelli chocolate and a slice of quiche. Save room
for a brownie, too. (920 Second Ave. S.)
