A Childhood Pastime, Reimagined Onstage

What: “Forts! Build Your Own Adventure”

At this interactive, family-friendly theater experience, audience members (or, participants) can build a fort (or forts!) with a stage-full of provided materials—from old sofas and lampshades to piles of blankets and towers of cardboard boxes. “It’s like the coolest attic you’ve ever seen,” said Children’s Theatre Company staff in a recent release.

Broadway at the Ordway

What: “Kimberly Akimbo”
When: Feb. 24-March 1
Where: Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, 345 Washington St., St. Paul

Tony-winning musical “Kimberly Akimbo” comes to a one-week run at the Ordway. The show follows Kimberly, a teen on the cusp of her 16th birthday, who’s dealing with a move to a new town, difficult family dynamics, a crush … and a run-in with the law. Kimberly’s struggles and her ultimate optimism are set against a beautiful, heartfelt score.

Celestial Sounds

What: “Music From Earth”
When: Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Nautilus Music-Theater Studio, 308 E. Prince St., St. Paul

The historic Golden Record, a collection of music and sounds from Earth, was sent into space aboard the Voyager in 1977. Now, composer Russ Kaplan will premiere a new choral and percussion suite, “Music From Earth,” that offers a fresh interpretation of music from the original Golden Record. Kaplan will perform with other notable Twin Cities musicians, including Timothy Berry, Rob Graham, Eri Isomura, Eugene Sandel, and more.

Spring Break Vibes

What: Tropics Days

Where: Minnesota Zoo, 13000 Zoo Blvd., Apple Valley

Visitors to the Minnesota Zoo this weekend can warm up where it’s always 78 degrees and sunny—the Tropics Trail, featuring animals and plants from equatorial climates around the world. Pick up a Tropics Days passport—and get a stamp at each stop along the trail—and bring it back for a prize. Sunscreen and flip-flops not required.

Feet Fly in the Sky

What: Skyway 5K
When: Feb. 28, 9 a.m.
Where: Union Depot, 214 Fourth St. E., St. Paul

Looking for a winter-friendly run? A new “5K in the sky” comes to St. Paul—and takes place completely indoors. The 5K course begins at Union Depot and weaves through multiple segments of the city’s skyway, eventually making its way back to the depot. Watch for designated viewing areas for spectators and a post-race celebration featuring local sponsors.

Bake Up a Good Time

What: STEM Family Day
When: Feb. 28, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Mill City Museum, 704 S. Second St., Minneapolis

Educators at the award-winning Mill City Museum in downtown Minneapolis present STEM Family Day, where visitors can learn about the history of science and engineering in the Twin Cities and participate in fun activities from partners like the Minnesota Raptor Center, the National Park Service, the Geological Society of Minnesota, and more.
