April 10, 2025, marks a significant milestone—the 100th anniversary of the publication of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, “The Great Gatsby.” This centennial celebration invites literary enthusiasts and history buffs to come together and honor the legacy of a work that continues to resonate, penned by a proud native of St. Paul.

Among the notable local landmarks that shaped Fitzgerald’s life and work are:

  • 481 Laurel Avenue: The birthplace of F. Scott Fitzgerald, on September 24, 1896.
  • 599 Summit Avenue: The brownstone where Fitzgerald penned his debut novel, “This Side of Paradise.”
  • University Club, 340 Cedar Street: The venue for the infamous “Bad Luck Ball” hosted by Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, in 1922.
  • The Commodore Hotel: Once a lively speakeasy and gathering place for Fitzgerald and his contemporaries during the roaring ’20s, visitors can still admire its exterior, although the bar is now reserved for private events.

As St. Paul (and the greater Twin Cities) embraces this literary legacy, Friends of the St. Paul Public Library and other organizations invite you to explore the profound impact of Fitzgerald and his timeless work throughout this special year. Attendees can look forward to live readings and an engaging exhibit at the Minnesota History Center, extravagant Gatsby-themed parties at Union Depot, and Celtic Junction Arts Center, as well as thought-provoking panel discussions at Urban Growler Brewing Co. and other local breweries.
