Minnesota boasts a rich assortment of historic figures, places, and traditions. With Halloween a little over a week away, one of these creative costumes paying tribute to the Land of 10,000 Lakes will be a hit at any party or event.
Jay Gatsby
“The Great Gatsby” is a staple book for most high school English classrooms. The author of this widely acclaimed classic, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was born and raised in St. Paul, and even began the process of writing this novel while residing in White Bear Lake. With a careful eye, one will notice that this widely acclaimed novel contains many references to places in Minnesota, especially in regard to the protagonist, Jay Gatsby. Rock Gatsby’s iconic, ritzy look with an all-white suit, bow tie, and a glistening champagne glass to raise a toast to Minnesota.
“Purple Rain”
Everyone knows and loves Prince, the Minneapolis-made musician that dominated the 1980s and beyond. With his powerhouse vocals and funky guitar solos, he is arguably one of the most influential artists ever. To honor this Minnesota legend and his iconic album and accompanying 1984 film “Purple Rain,” take on Halloween in all purple: flared pants, lots of glitter, and perhaps even a faux guitar. Plus, according to the Search Engine Journal, “1980s” is one of the top 10 Halloween costume searches this year, so this costume is perfectly on trend.
Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox
The tale of the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his helpful companion, Babe, is often attributed to Minnesota. The legend goes that the pair settled in a camp near Onion River, where Paul and Babe chopped trees and hauled lumber. Along the way, it is said that Paul dug the Great Lakes to provide drinking water for Babe. This costume would be a clever yet simple nod to the natural elements of Minnesota, only requiring jeans, a black hat, suspenders, and a red flannel for Paul, and an all-blue outfit with horns for Babe.
