Downtown Rochester doesn’t hibernate—it glows. Feb. 6-7, the Rochester Downtown Alliance once again transforms Peace Plaza into a luminous, joy-filled winter playground as Social-Ice returns for its 19th year. Equal parts art installation, block party, and cold-weather celebration, the beloved event invites Minnesotans to lean into the season with towering, professionally carved ice sculptures, colorful lighting, interactive games, and themed ice bars pouring signature cocktails and mocktails—all set to high-energy DJ beats that keep the plaza buzzing well after dark.

This year’s “Beach” theme brings a playful twist to winter, but at its heart, Social-Ice remains what it’s always been: a gathering rooted in community, resilience, and the simple pleasure of showing up—even when it’s cold. Admission is free and open to all ages, making it an easy excuse to bundle up, grab friends, and make a night of it downtown. On Friday, the party runs from 4-10 p.m.; Saturday keeps the energy going from 1-10 p.m., with plenty of reasons to linger, dance, and wander among the glowing ice.
Families get their own moment in the spotlight during Social-Ice FAM JAM, happening Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Designed for hardy Minnesotans of every age, the afternoon packs in curling, s’mores by the fire pits, sled dog puppies from Winona State University, a kid-friendly DJ dance party, art activities, mascots, selfie stations, and warm drinks to keep the chill at bay. It’s wholesome, high-energy winter fun—and a reminder that cold weather doesn’t have to slow anyone down.

After nearly two decades, Social-Ice has weathered it all—warm winters that challenged the ice, global moments that reshaped how we gather—and still returns, year after year, as a signature Rochester tradition. Call it Social-Ice, Social (n)Ice, or simply an excuse to celebrate winter together; one thing’s certain: this is a festival that belongs to Rochester. Bundle up, bring your crew, and meet downtown for a winter experience that proves Minnesota doesn’t just endure the cold—we throw a party in it.
