Research that redefines the practice.

The research conducted through our orthopedic research center is changing the practice as we know it. It involves cutting-edge laboratory work in cellular and molecular biology, advanced biomechanics, artificial intelligence, and motion analysis — among others — and produces a large body of clinical knowledge. This is evident in the over 400 articles our department publishes in peer reviewed literature every year. As an example, the pediatric orthopedic surgeons at Mayo Clinic worked on the development and FDA approval of vertebral body tethering, which is a tethering device and procedure for patients with scoliosis, and a surgical alternative to fusing the spine to correct the condition. This device allows for curve correction while still preserving motion and growth, which is extremely beneficial for young patients and can prevent some of the lifelong challenges that can come with fusion of the vertebrae.
Utilizing and designing the cutting edge.
Mayo Clinic Orthopedics is at the forefront of modern technology for personalized and accurate execution of surgical plans—including technologies like point of care 3D printing, mixed reality for shoulder arthroplasty, robotic-assisted surgery for hip and knee replacement, and incision-less carpal tunnel release. We are also on the leading edge of regenerative medicine. Not only do our orthopedic surgeons use the most advanced technology, they are also intimately involved with the design of many of the implants used for orthopedic reconstruction around the world.
