Here is the elusive and mighty great grey owl perched in boreal bird haven Sax-Zim Bog, located 47 miles northwest of Duluth. Winter is often the best season to spot these owls—largest in North America, with up to a 5-foot wingspan—but this one was hunting for prey at dusk in the budding spring. –Reed Fischer
