Paul Bunyan, is that you? The Upper Midwest’s most famous lumberjack would feel right at home at Faribault’s annual Flannel Formal, which returns for its 10th year on March 7. “We like to call it the most Minnesotan event in Minnesota,” says Devin Winjum, director of Visit Faribault.

The festivities are held at the Craft Beverage Curve, an atmospheric venue in Faribault’s historic downtown. Guests can try their hands at axe-throwing, earn a collectible pint glass (for the first 500 ticket holders), enter the lumberjack and jane costume contest, or participate in the hotdish showdown, where local casserole cooks will compete for bragging rights over tater tots and more.

“The idea for the formal actually came from a friend of the [chamber of commerce] who was visiting his kid at Notre Dame,” Winjum says. “He heard they used to host a Minnesota-themed flannel formal that was a huge hit … We still carry on the tradition right here in historic downtown Faribault.” Now in its 10th year, under twinkle lights and around a cozy fire, the event has evolved from a low-key gathering to a “quirky, Minnesota-themed kegger party where everyone trades their suits for flannel to celebrate everything fun and unique about our state,” Winjum says.
New this year are a heated tent and a signature Sleigh Bar, along with the axe-throwing activity, which will be led by professional instructors. A VIP ticket option offers early access to the party, a private music performance, and a spot on the judging panel for the lumberjack costume and best beard contests.

“Expect a totally laid-back, Minnesota night,” Winjum says. “It’s a mix of great craft beer, cocktails, and live music paired with lumberjack games and raffles … It’s the kind of night where everyone is your neighbor and the vibe is just pure fun.”
