The city of Janesville has never been too bothered by the cold. Instead of boarding up windows as the temperatures dip, this riverside hot spot transforms into a winter dreamscape, complete with holiday events, recreational activities, and lively outdoor festivities, among many other seasonal enchantments. Just a four- and half-hour drive from the Twin Cities, Janesville is the perfect weekend escape for friends and families this winter, offering a seasonal charm that is distinctly its own.

      1. Winter hiking and recreation

Take advantage of Janesville’s many picturesque parks and trails, which are anything but vacant during the winter months. Whether winter hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing, you will be captivated by the beauty of these landscapes, including Ice Age National Scenic Trail, Robert O Cook Memorial Arboretum, and Rockport Park.

      2. Wisconsin’s holiday destination

Maximize your holiday spirit this festive season, by exploring the 60-plus dazzling events put on in Janesville. Take a walk through a breathtaking winter garden adorned with over 1.5 million lights at the Holiday Light Show, or tour the historic Lincoln-Tallman house, which sparkles from top to bottom with the glow of 100 decorated and lit Christmas trees at the Holiday Tree Show.

      3. Public Art Trail

Janesville’s Public Art Trail showcases the community’s cultural identity, history, and creative vision—and is an attraction visitors can enjoy no matter the season! Bundle up and stroll along as you admire more than 60 pieces of art, including sculptures, memorials, and 30 large-scale murals created by artists from various locations across North America. Many of the murals even include interactive plaques with a QR code that leads to an audio description of the mural in the artist’s own voice.

      4. Self-guided history tours

Travel back in time as you explore the historic districts of Janesville, such as Courthouse Hill and Look West. Using the Clio app, walk, bike, or drive to discover the 80-plus historical sites on the app within 5 miles of downtown Janesville. Winter can provide a lovely backdrop to appreciate this journey through history.

      5. A vibrant downtown

Janesville’s downtown is the heart of the community, where visitors will find plenty of options for shopping and dining. Browse unique finds at charming boutiques like Velvet & Tulle, vintage shops such as 608 Vintage, art stores like Raven’s Wish, and other local retailers. Then head to any of the exceptional dining options to enjoy a memorable meal. Genisa Wine Bar, Lark, drafthouse, and Cozy Inn are just a few of the options.

      6. Flannelfest Craft Beer Experience

This lively outdoor winter festival is to be held in Janesville’s Town Square on Feb. 24. Don your best flannel and join in on the festivities, which include samplings of over 40 craft beers and over 50 home brew beers, unlimited game play, a commemorative tasting mug on a lanyard, and—of course—all things flannel!

      7. Janesville Performing Arts Center

Take a break from the winter cold at the Janesville Performing Arts Center, where you can catch a winter performance, play, or concert at its gorgeous 633-seat theatre. Check the schedule for upcoming seasonal shows and events.

      8. Winter Farmers Market

If you miss the joy of strolling through farmers markets each winter, then Janesville is your go-to destination. Attend its indoor Winter Farmers Market, hosted Uptown on first and third Saturdays in November and December, and on first Saturdays in January through April. Explore its offerings of local produce, handmade crafts, art, and other unique goods made by local artisans.

      9. Wineries and breweries

Taste your way through the area’s three wineries and two brewpubs, which offer diverse flavors and unique stories. Sample distinct local flavors at Timber Hill, a boutique winery that uses cold climate varietals grown in Wisconsin, or let your taste buds travel farther at Northleaf Winery, which uses grapes grown across California, Chile, New York, and Wisconsin. For exciting variety, explore the red, white, sweet, dry, and fortified wines at Fermenting Cellars. Beer lovers will feel right at home at Rock County Brewing Company, Janesville’s first nano brewery with an ever-changing menu of fresh beer, as well as Good Works Brewing Company, the area’s newest addition to the craft brewing scene.

      10. Rotary Botanical Gardens

Explore the beauty of nature even throughout winter, at the Rotary Botanical Gardens. While the flowers may be dormant, the garden transforms into a serene winter landscape, perfect for taking a peaceful stroll or capturing gorgeous photos.
