In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there’s only one Lake City! Just an hour from the Twin Cities metro and 30 minutes from Rochester, this lovely little hamlet is the perfect spot for an adventure getaway.

Anglers delight in Lake Pepin, one of the best fisheries in the Midwest. With 90 species and a walleye season that never closes, Lake City has many advantages over other popular fishing-centric destinations. Access is a breeze, too. You’ll find piers, docks, and ramps, making it easy to get to the shoreline for however you like to wet a line.

Golfers will find a half-dozen scenic courses within a 20-minute drive of downtown, including the world-class, Hale Irwin-designed Jewel Golf Club right within city limits.
There’s an activity for every interest in Lake City. Sail sport enthusiasts clamor to Lake Pepin’s winds, birders flock to this globally important migration route, cyclists can enjoy beautiful vistas around the lake or on gravel county roads, and hikers can wander through miles and miles of trails at Hok Si La Park and Campground and Frontenac State Park.

Oh, and did we mention that you can take water ski lessons in this renowned birthplace of the sport? Or, if a little more low-key time on the water suits your style, boat rentals and sail charters are readily available.
Need even more fresh air? Dine on one of Lake City’s beautiful restaurant terraces, or pack a picnic to enjoy on downtown’s Ohuta Beach or in the picturesque Patton Park. Don’t forget to throw the windows open and let in the breeze at one of the city’s many lakeside lodging options. Trust us, you’re going to want to stay.

Pro tip: Visit during one of Lake City’s famed June events. Complete with boat shuttles, the Tour de Pepin (June 6, 2026) is a noncompetitive, supported ride that visits the quaint burgs that line the lake. Water Ski Days (June 25-28, 2026) is a huge celebration of history and sport where you can experience ski shows and competitions, massive concerts, and a free “get on the water” youth clinic hosted by athletes from the USA Water Ski and Wake Sport Foundation.
