It’s that time of year when classroom supply lists are posted, fall jackets get more wear, and the sun appears just a little later each morning. That’s the perfect time to head to Alexandria in central Minnesota, just two hours from the Twin Cities. Whether your kiddos are headed back to school or you’re an empty nester (or anything in between), you’ll find Alexandria can keep you entertained for days. Learn more on our website.
The lakes take several weeks to cool down—so don’t write off those warm days just yet. Enjoy a resort stay, rent a pontoon, or go fishing. A local guide can show you secret hot spots for your fish of choice, accounting for their changing behavior as long summer days turn cool. Pontoons aren’t the only watercraft available to rent—local shops can set you up with paddleboards, kayaks, jet skis, and more. Don’t forget to be generous with the sunscreen and stay hydrated while you’re on the lake!
Expand your outdoor adventure beyond the water. Hear the crunch of leaves as you hike in a state park, pop your collar and go biking on the Central Lakes Trail, see the fall colors on horseback, hunt for mushrooms, or work on your birding skills. Because Alexandria is on the edge of both prairie and forested biomes, it’s a popular flyway for birds migrating south for the winter. Hawks, ospreys, and owls are joined by ducks and swans as they seek warmer climates.
Besides flying and swimming animals, Alexandria is home to four-legged friends who love to be visited by kids—especially when they bring their parents! Erickson’s Petting Zoo is an old farmstead with dozens of friendly animals to pet and feed, plus a maze, playground, sand pile, pony ring, and more. Or check out Country Blossom Farm & Cider House, where you can pick your own berries, apples, and pumpkins, browse the gift shop, and not get lost in the corn maze! A family favorite is the farm-to-table bakery.
It’s also harvest season at the local vineyards and breweries. Visit Carlos Creek Winery, 22 Northmen Brewing Co., Panther Distillery, and Copper Trail Brewing. Most offer delicious food pairings and often feature live music on the weekends. You could easily fill two or more days just visiting the 13 breweries and vineyards in the region!
No Alexandria vacation is complete without knowing where to eat and shop. Our charming downtown is made for leisurely strolls—grab a coffee (or tea or libation), relax on a bench by a flower basket, and explore the unique stores. From antique treasures to elegant gowns, cozy bookstores, candy shops, and quirky gift boutiques, you’ll find more than one treasure that speaks to your style. The dining variety is equally impressive. Want breakfast at the crack of dawn (with cinnamon rolls the size of a… well, really big)? Or late-night wood-fired pizza? Check the Food & Drink section of our website for current options and links to restaurant pages.
While you’re downtown, visit the farmers market and the art market near Big Ole. Take a selfie with him and tag us in your pictures (#ExploreAlex). And one last suggestion for your fall visit in Alexandria… start planning your winter getaway!
