The Perfect Road Trip:
First, we take you behind the scenes on a Black Hills and Badlands vacation commute. Getting here, especially in the fall, is half the fun! While the area is famous for its summer road trips, we think traveling with the windows down in fall is just as fun. The temperatures are pleasant—not too hot, and not too cold—and the scenery is just right. The leaves start to change around the end of September, and with careful tracking made easy by state parks and local travel organizations, you’ll be able to see when and where the leaves are crisping in real-time. A highlight: With less traffic, you’ll be able to get up and go when the leaves call!
The Perfect Wilderness
Next, our crew sets the scene. After you arrive, we’d recommend getting a map or two—because you’re not going to want to miss a thing. Check out recommended scenic drives, and from there, plot out some travels by foot. Hiking in the Black Hills and Badlands region during autumn is one of the best things to do because it’s wallet-friendly, you can choose your own duration, and it’s one of our favorite activities that lets you be a part of the wilderness action. Of course, while we love walking the pine-peppered trails, we also love to pause to keep an eye out for—and keep our distance from—the incredible wildlife that calls this region home. Bison roam the prairie around the Badlands and trek across the terrain in places like Custer State Park. If you get caught in a “buffalo jam,” stay in your car but take out your phone; you’re going to have pictures and videos to hold onto for a lifetime!
The Perfect Space
The Black Hills and Badlands are renowned for their open spaces, but what about their open attractions? One of the best perks of the autumn season is the shortened wait time for classic attractions in the region. Much like the leaves changing, if the timing is right, you’ll be able to play your way around the Black Hills and Badlands with ease and very few crowds.
