Snowmobiling
As a top Minnesota snowmobiling destination with nearly 400 miles of groomed trails, you’ll experience expansive views of Lake Superior and serene beauty deep within the Superior National Forest.
The North Shore Trail, extending 146 miles from Duluth to Grand Marais, delivers a prime glimpse of Minnesota’s most ruggedly beautiful scenery. It also connects to the Two Harbors Corridor Trail and the Tomahawk Trail, leading to Ely.
Many sledders can find group accommodations right along the snowmobile trails for easy access.
Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing & Winter Hiking
Strap on winter boots, snowshoes, or cross-country skis, and venture out for an afternoon wildlife expedition. Track hares, shrews, wolves, deer, and ermine. Step soundlessly through the north woods, guess the width of virgin pine, listen to the chickadees, or just savor the moment.
Several shops and ski areas rent snowshoes, and many resorts allow guests free use.
Winter Fishing
While every Minnesota lake turns solid in the winter, Lake Superior rarely freezes over, often allowing open-water fishing year-round. Prime areas to fish are near river mouths and off break walls for coho salmon, steelhead, lake trout, and more.
Lake County – blessed with many inland lakes = makes an excellent Minnesota ice fishing destination. We recommend ice fishing for Walleye and Northern Pike at the White Iron Chain of Lakes near Ely, MN.
Fat Biking
Fat biking on the North Shore has become a popular winter recreational activity! So, bring your fat or mountain bike (or rent one at Spokengear in Two Harbors) and hit the Lake County Demonstration Forest or Split Rock Lighthouse State Park fat-biking trails. If you’ve never had the experience of mushing through the snowy woods, we recommend you try dogsledding or skijoring. You’ll create a memorable winter adventure with adorable dogs who love to haul!
