Investing is not gambling. Investing is being patient, prudent, and diversified. And if you’re fortunate enough to work with private wealth advisor Rob Nelson with Ameriprise, named a 2009 “Top Wealth Adviser” by Barron’s, you’ll know that investing also means having a private guide—a valuable financial resource—who will go out of his way to help you navigate any financial situation that comes down your path.

“I want my clients to feel comfortable picking up the phone and calling me when they’re faced with any financial decision,” Nelson says. “I want them to know I’m looking out for their best interests.”

With 16 years of experience, he takes great pride in getting to know his clients so that, together, they can establish a tailored financial plan. He doesn’t just look at his clients’ current net worth, stocks, taxes, or insurance needs—but also at their values and dreams—to help them achieve their long-term goals.

How would you describe your clients?
Busy professional men and women—corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and pro athletes who are time-poor and need someone to manage the pieces of their financial lives.

What sets you apart from the competition?
We take the big-picture approach to help our clients meet their life goals. We not only manage their investment assets, but guide them on tax projections, partner with estate planners, and make sure their benefits are coordinated with other financial objectives.

Have you experienced success over multiple cycles?
We have. We build out well-diversified portfolios with the goal of earning reasonable returns over long periods of time. And we make sure there are no surprises. There’s a lot of information out there, it can be overwhelming, and our goal is to cut through the clutter and help our clients make informed, educated decisions in good times and when times are less-than-ideal.

What financial advice can you offer our readers?
There is no one-size-fits-all ‘magic solution.’ Clients who effectively build wealth use a number of different strategies—saving into a dedicated retirement plan, systematically investing in different markets, and making sure the combination of strategies work together with a common purpose.
