If you’re a lover of Lake Superior, you likely know the term “Gales of November.” And if you’re a newbie—meaning you’ve never visited the North Shore during the November or December gales—you’re in for a real treat.
Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts provides a front-row seat to the gales of Lake Superior in November and December. Guests travel from near and far to see, hear, and feel the power of these gigantic waves on the greatest of lakes. That’s why Bluefin Bay Resorts created the Gales Special more than 20 years ago.
Gales Special
Stay three nights at any of our Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts during the Gales of November and December and receive one night (midweek night) free. The Gales Special runs from Oct. 13 (early this year) through Dec. 20, 2019, with the exception of holiday weekends. Click here to learn more and book your stay.
What are the November Gales?
A descriptor typically used in nautical contexts, a gale is a very strong, sustained wind. The National Weather Service defines a gale as 39–54 miles per hour of sustained surface winds. Gales typically occur when cold, dry air from Northern Canada converges with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico over the Great Lakes. On top of the mixture of air, all of this is stirred up with the warm summer water of the Great Lakes.
The great lakes, especially Lake Superior, have taken many ships and human lives during the wrath of the gales. If you want to learn more, check out this article by Lake Superior Magazine on nine famous Superior storms.
