Spring in Cook County may bring sunshine and t-shirt weather or a foot of fresh powder – or both within a short window of time, so prepare for anything and everything. While we’re always a little sad to see winter go, we’re also excited to say hello to spring and to welcome seasonal visitors to our region. Here are a few activities to try when you visit.
Feel the Power of Waterfall Season
When the snow starts melting, the waterfalls start flowing. You won’t believe the raw hydrological power that cascades down from our highlands into Lake Superior. A simple hike becomes an adventure to remember forever during waterfall season.
Viewing High Falls in Grand Portage State Park is always a springtime favorite. Rapid snowmelt makes High Falls a sight to behold. At 120 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in Minnesota and also serves as a border to Canada. Hello, neighbors!

Get Back on the Bike
Is there anything better than getting back on your bike after a long winter? It’s like getting back in touch with an old friend – like no time has passed at all. When the weather warms up and our trails dry out from the last of the winter snow, bike season in Cook County takes off. This spring, make your way over to the new Jackpot Trail at Britton Peak or give the Pincushion Mountain Trails at Grand Marais a whirl. You’ll find challenges for every skill level and beautiful views to boot.
Channel Your Inner Birder
Not many people know that the Superior National Forest in Cook County is home to over 155 bird species. It’s pretty unlikely that you’ll have the opportunity to see them all in one visit to Cook County, but we certainly invite you to try! As you explore our region, note the birds you see and reference our free birding guide for more information. In spring, you may spot tundra swan, sandhill crane, and the rusty blackbird along the shore. You may also see boreal owls and northern saw-whet owls begin nesting in the forest.

Spring fishing just can’t be beat. The walleyes are ready to feed, and it’s the best time of year for fishing. Whether you prefer to cast from a peaceful shore, a canoe in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or a guided charter boat, you’ll find the fishing opportunity you’re looking for in Cook County.
