Considering that it’s just about back-to-school time again (I know, crazy!), I thought I would write about Minneapolis’ new schoolhouse-themed property, The Commons Hotel. Located on the University of Minnesota’s campus, the hotel recently underwent at $15 million renovation, transforming the former Radisson into an unrecognizable version of its previous self. Inspired by its location, everything about the hotel—from its book butler services to Edison-esque light bulbs—follows the hotel’s geek-chic design model. For me, staying here allowed me to relive the fun parts of school, where I felt inspired by learning, you know, without all those pesky tests or homework assignments.
The 304-room property features deluxe and superior rooms in addition to two 800-square-foot VIP suites (right), which include a living room (stocked with games and puzzles) and two bathrooms.
The hotel’s restaurant, Beacon Public House, specializes in gastropub cuisine. For guests, school-themed activities such as Words with Friends Wine Hours and Retro Bar Bingo are offered.
From library-like wallpaper to real books placed throughout, geek-chic can be found everywhere. Other fun features include framed footage of old U of M football games in the lobby, and vintage U of M sporting pictures hung in the fitness center.
