They slobber, they whine, they jump, they beg, they disobey—but they’re so darn cute and loveable. The Humane Society reports that 78.2 million dogs are owned in the U.S. and 46 percent of U.S. households own at least one dog. Yes, we love our dogs and that’s why Grand Avenue in St. Paul is holding a special event this Sunday just for our favorite furry friends (people are welcome, too!).
Paws on Grand is sort of like Grand Old Day (one of the biggest one-day festivals in the Midwest), but for dogs. The street is shut down from Fairview Avenue to Dale Street for the event that is held from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. There will be 15 rescue groups present and 36 participating businesses that welcome both four and two-legged visitors. Paws on Grand is the perfect way to spend some time with your pet and also discover the majestic Grand Avenue area.

Don’t bother to bring your own dog treats, because many of the businesses are giving away free doggie delicacies, but that’s not all that will be free. You can have professional photos taken of your pet at Mims Photography, get a tote bag filled with goodies from Dog Days & St. Paul Pet Supply, and take advantage of the numerous sales that will be going on along the avenue when you bring your pet.
You and your pet can also win great prizes. Richaux Productions is offering pet glamour shots that will be posted to the Paws on Grand Facebook page for a photo contest. The pet with the most votes will win gift cards and prizes from Grand Avenue businesses. Grand Avenue Veterinary Center will have a drawing to win a gift basket, including a gift certificate for a free exam and two free vaccines.
If you want chances to enter prizes and simultaneously donate to a group that benefits animals, donate $10 to The Pet Project and receive a PawsPort. If you get your PawsPort stamped by at least seven of the Grand Avenue businesses and drop it off at one of The Pet Project’s booths you will be entered to win the grand prize: an all-inclusive stay at Gunflint Lodge on the Gunflint Trail north of Grand Marais. Four runners-up will win prize packs of $100 in gift cards to Grand Avenue businesses.
Paws on Grand is sure to be filled with love—puppy love that is. Celebrate by attending, or having your pet participate, in pet weddings outside of the Wedding Shoppe and witness four legs become eight as they join in “Holy Mutt-rimony.” If your pet isn’t ready for the commitment, then visit Coulee Bank for the first ever canine fashion show where these stylish pups will strut down Grand Avenue sporting fashions from Quince Gifts.
