If you have little ones, make sure to check out New Ulm’s 37th Annual Oktoberfest, which always takes place the first and second weekends of October. Named by the Travel Channel as one of the most kid-friendly Oktoberfest events in 2018, kids are sure to have fun at the Oktoberfest Kostume on Parade at 11 a.m. on Oct. 13 along with the horse-drawn trolley rides, German music, and games.

It is during this second weekend that the second oldest family-owned brewery in America and the largest brewery in Minnesota, August Schell’s Brewing Co., celebrates the fall’s traditional German holiday. Schell’s Oktoberfest promises a day full of festivities, beer, and authentic German food.

Spend the late morning (yes, morning—Schell’s will open its gates at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13) underneath the fest tent with your German lager in hand. (The beer wagon will arrive at 10:45 and the tapping of the fest keg will take place at 11 a.m.) In the afternoon, enjoy live music by Schell’s Hobo Band and Alpensterne, purchase authentic German food, and participate in the stein holding contest if you’re feeling strong enough. Admission for Schell’s Oktoberfest is $10 (kids 12 and under are free) and remember, dressing up is encouraged!

Before heading down to New Ulm, make sure to check its website for more Oktoberfest events happening this weekend (Oct. 5 and 6) and next weekend (Oct. 12 and 13).
