When the Smithsonian Institution was first established in our nation’s capital in 1846, its mission was “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Today, the institution’s Washington, D.C., holdings alone include 19 museums, nine research centers, and a zoo, all of which offer free admission every day. It’s in this spirit that Smithsonian magazine created its annual event, Museum Day Live!, in which participating museums across the country open their doors to the public for free admission.
On Saturday, September 29, museum patrons with a Museum Day Live! pass may enjoy free admission to area museums, including the Walker Art Center, the American Swedish Institute, and the Minnesota History Center, among many others. One ticket will gain you and a guest entry to the museum of your choice. Just go online, fill out a form, and you will then get instructions on how to download your ticket. If you want to go, I’d recommend getting your tickets soon. Admission could fill up fast; museums have the right to limit participation due to capacity concerns. The tickets do not include parking fees or additional admission to any special exhibits.
So if you are planning to be out and about next Saturday, make a museum visit a part of your itinerary. Participating museums are located across the state—from the Goodhue County Historical Society in Red Wing, to the Duluth Art Institute, to the Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, and everywhere in between.
