When I hopped on a Segway for the first time a few years ago, it was sort of surreal. I felt weird just standing on it, and then leaning forward to zip down the street. It took me a while to get used to the feel, but once I caught on I enjoyed taking a Magical History Tour of Minneapolis. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but it’s actually a great way to get to know the Twin Cities, ’cause you cover a lot of ground.

Twin Cities Segway tours, from Mobile Entertainment, started in 2004 with just the Magical History Tour of Minneapolis. Since then, Mobile Entertainment has upgraded its fleet of Segways (to Gen2) and expanded its array of tours to include St. Paul, and this summer added a Sculpture Garden Tour and a Real Ghost Tour (walking).
In Minneapolis, the tour rolls you from St. Anthony Main around the riverfront, with great views of the Mississippi River from the Stone Arch Bridge and stops by places like the Guthrie Theater, Mill City Museum, and Nicollet Island. In St. Paul, the tour starts along Summit Avenue and then takes you past destinations such as the James J. Hill House, Saint Paul Cathedral, and the Minnesota State Capitol. The new Sculpture Garden Tour brings riders out from downtown Minneapolis to the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, while the Real Ghost Tour explores the dark secrets of Minneapolis (perfect for Halloween season!).
Tours (which last a few hours) show some unique views of the cities and include a history lesson from a professional guide. And don’t worry; they’ll give you a Segway lesson before they take you out. City tours run through mid November; Sculpture Garden Tours run through Oct. 30.
