Strong winds ruined nearly 30 ships along the north shore of Lake Superior in November 1905, prompting the U.S. Lighthouse Service to build the now-famous Split Rock Lighthouse. Named a National Historic Landmark in 2011, the area continues to draw visitors for tours and spectacular views. (Follow Tim Graul on Instagram at @timgraulphotography.)
