In spite of its dubious origins, Thanksgiving in its best sense is a time for family and friends to get together, appreciate each other, and bond over delicious food. If you’re hosting this year, don’t just go through the motions. In the coming weeks, there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the Twin Cities to help you upgrade your Thanksgiving spread, either through creating beautiful floral decorations or trying out a new spin on an old favorite recipe. Check out the list below for opportunities to learn a new craft (and impress your guests!).

Fox Glove Market—Inspiring Thanksgiving Tablescapes: Spruce up your drab Thanksgiving table with the addition of some seasonal plants and edibles at each place setting. Christine Hoffman of Fox Glove Market will share her ideas and the materials necessary to create an inventive, thematic tablescape. $65 (11/17)

Bachman’s Thanksgiving Turkey Floral Design Workshop: The flower shop’s Lyndale location offers a more literal take on the Thanksgiving centerpiece—the finished creation should resemble a turkey. Seasonal plants and flowers such as mums and bird of paradise make up the sculptural centerpiece. $50. (11/19)

Mother Earth Garden Thanksgiving Centerpiece Workshop: The Northeast Minneapolis shop provides all the materials and guidance you need to make a seasonal floral arrangement. Get in the spirit of the season with this community-driven workshop that will help liven up your Thanksgiving table. $45. (11/20)

Cooks of Crocus Hill—Thanksgiving: Baked to Perfection: Tired of your usual Thanksgiving menu? Head to the kitchenware supplier’s Edina location for some inventive recipe ideas that will complement your old favorites. You’ll learn how to make a butternut squash galette, a pear almond tart, and more. Check Cooks’ website for details on their other Thanksgiving-themed classes. $75. (11/20)

Fleur de Lis Thanksgiving Centerpiece Workshop: Held in neighboring restaurant the French Hen, this charming Cathedral Hill flower shop provides the materials you need to create a lovely floral centerpiece. Its evergreen base makes for an easy decorative transition from fall to winter. The French Hen provides wine and hors d’oeuvres. $85. (11/22)

MN Landscape Arboretum—Make a Thanksgiving Table Centerpiece: Taught by floral designer Ashley Fox, this workshop focuses on using less obvious elements like fruits and vegetables to make unexpected and creative centerpieces. The cost of the class covers admission to the entire Chaska arboretum. $89-99. (11/22)
