This year commemorates Walker Art Center’s 75th anniversary, which the museum will celebrate with a four-day party, Winter Walkerland. Taking place Feb. 5-Feb. 8, the weekend offers a variety of exhibitions and activities for those who want to help celebrate.
The party kicks off on Thursday with an opening night celebration featuring an Ice Bar stocked with Prairie Organic Vodka. Admission to the grand opening of the new exhibition, 75 Gifts for 75 Years, is free and also available on Winter Walkerland’s opening night. The exhibition spotlights recent donations in paintings, prints, video, photography, drawings, and sculpture, highlighting the impact donors from multiple generations have had on the public art center. On all four of the days you can ice skate for free on a rink built in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, near the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. Too chilly? The Walker is providing a specialty hot cocoa bar to guests (first drink is on them!) and free gallery admission Friday through Sunday. You can even take the Walker’s history into your own hands and head over to the museum’s website to add photos and a story documenting your first experience at the center. The interactive entertainment doesn’t stop there: Hotline, a project by artist Kelsey Snook, allows participants to literally pick up the phone and ask art experts their most burning questions on Thursday and Saturday.
