In this program visitors will get a chance to play the game of chunky, a sport enjoyed by the people of Americas’ first cities 1,000 years ago. Chunky is a game that involves rolling discs across the ground and throwing spears as close to the disc's resting point as possible. It's a great game to play out under the summer skies and on the summer grasses!

Learn about the mammal species of our prairie by examining tanned hides, skulls, and other bones.Visitors will have the opportunity to work up close and personal with nature by making a plaster cast of an animal track.One of our interpreters will provide a brief lecture on local prairie species and assist in making track casts.

Learn how early hunters created arrowheads for their spears or arrows by observing a flintknapper demonstrate the craft. Xoloti Bembe Ek (Alex Ek) will offer a close up look at the process of creating stone projectile points and discuss their use. After the demonstration, try your own hand at knapping!

Prairie Plant Identification Walk
Join local nature conservationist Davis Harder on a plant identification walk. Davis Harder works in the conservation field and is passionate about the ecology of southwestern Minnesota. Join Jeffers Petroglyphs for an evening observing the night sky and a special sunset look at the rock carvings. Talk a walk and view the petroglyphs, watch the sun go down, and—in our beautifully dark sky—view the stars with our telescopes. August 10 is near the peak of the Perseids meteor shower—weather permitting we hope to get a good view! Dress for the weather and for insect protection as needed.

In this "make and take" program, visitors will try their hand at building a pinch pot with various tools based on prehistoric examples. You will be able work with with natural cordage, cord wrapped stick, cord wrapped paddle, smoothing stones, and dentate and punctate stamps to shape and decorate a pot inspired by our historic examples (or make it uniquely your own).

Archaeology Day
Join us for Archaeology Day and learn about the archaeology of the Red Rock Ridge. We will also discuss how new technology helps archaeologists understand the past. We will celebrate all things discoverable through archeology and more. You will be able to participate in pottery making crafts, atlatl throwing, and many other hands-on activities, demonstrations and displays.
